A posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) can present with similar symptoms, but has a very different treatment and prognosis.
US can quickly and accurately diagnose and distinguish between RD and PVD.
Both RD and PVD will appear as hyperechoic or bright white membranes in the posterior chamber.
To differentiate an RD from a PVD, one should find the optic nerve.
